The Moravian Institute is a transformative educational initiative launched by the Moravian Church Eastern West Indies Province (EWI). Rooted in the rich theological heritage of the Moravian tradition and shaped by a distinctly Caribbean perspective, the Institute exists to equip disciples, empower leaders, and transform communities through faith-based education, ministry training, and leadership development.
The Moravian Church, also known as the Unitas Fratrum, traces its origins to 15th-century Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic), emerging from the reformist movements led by John Hus. In 1732, the Moravians began their missionary work in the Caribbean, establishing their first mission among enslaved Africans on the island of St. Thomas.
Their commitment to both evangelism and education quickly spread across the region. The Moravian Church was among the first Christian denominations to prioritize the education of enslaved and freed peoples, establishing primary and secondary schools throughout the West Indies.
This legacy of holistic ministry—combining spiritual formation, education, and social uplift—continues to shape the mission of the Moravian Church today.
These foundational principles guide every aspect of our educational mission and ministry.
